Fatal accident leads to DWI charges for 1 in North Carolina

Facing allegations of driving under the influence of alcohol can be a stressful and intimidating process. The penalties for a drunk driving conviction are serious, and may only increase in severity if an accident occurs, especially one resulting in death. A postal service worker has been charged with DWI after a recent accident that claimed the life of a moped driver in North Carolina.

Local authorities claim the accident took place around 5:30 p.m. on a recent Wednesday, when the postal worker suddenly veered into the opposite lane. According to reports, her vehicle struck an oncoming moped, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. She was taken to the hospital shortly after the accident for treatment, and has since been accused of driving while intoxicated.

No information was provided as to how authorities came to believe the woman was intoxicated at the time of the collision. It is unclear if field sobriety or breath tests were performed, or if a blood test was conducted while she was at the hospital. If convicted of DWI, she would face serious consequences that could have a significant impact on her future.

Those accused of DWI may choose to prepare for legal proceedings by focusing on their defense. Since this can be complex, an individual could choose to speak with an experienced attorney for guidance early on. A defense attorney in North Carolina can evaluate the charges and evidence against a client and provide advice on the best course of action with which to proceed, and if a conviction cannot be avoided, assist in pursuing a lesser sentence during court proceedings.
