2 facing drug charges following traffic stop in North Carolina

Law enforcement agencies across the country make use of K-9 units to detect the presence of illegal narcotics in a variety of scenarios. In traffic stops, these units may perform an open air search of a vehicle, and many individuals have been accused of a crime under similar circumstances. Two women have recently been arrested and are now facing drug charges after a recent traffic stop in North Carolina.

According to authorities, the traffic stop was initiated in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 on a recent Monday. During this period, a K-9 unit was called out to investigate, and after performing an open air search, police claim the unit indicated that there were drugs within the vehicle. This led to a search, which allegedly uncovered the presence of as much as 130 pounds of marijuana.

The nature of the violation that led authorities to initiate a traffic stop is unclear, and no information was provided as to what led them to enlist the services of the K-9 unit. There were two women traveling in the vehicle at the time, and both were arrested shortly after the search. According to reports, both stand accused of drug trafficking, and while bail has been set, each remains in custody while awaiting court proceedings.

The consequences of a conviction for drug charges of this nature are severe, and those confronted with similar allegations may benefit from seeking counsel early on. By retaining a defense attorney, a client in North Carolina could obtain advice on making informed decisions. An attorney can work toward protecting a client's legal rights throughout the process and provide advice on the best course of action to take during legal proceedings.
